Afraid of the Dark Jamie was inspired to write this song after talking to her friend Gina Marley who told her a story from Young Women's camp, and night terrors suffered as a child. Gina and some other young women leaders were asked to follow an LDS bishop on to a trail in the camp area for an object lesson. It was around dark, so they were trying to hurry to avoid the blackness of night. They were following paper plates that were affixed to poles and trees, which directed them to where they were to go next. As the setting sun became lower in the horizon, they found it increasingly dificult to find their way. Finally one of the women asked if anyone had a light. The Bishop quickly got out a lighter and lit the flame. The fire made a little light to see. Upon the produced light, someone asked if he had a flashlight. He did. Perplexed at why he haden't gotten the light out before, one of the women asked why he waited for someone to ask. Then the Bishop reminded the women that, like our Savior who has the "Light," we must seek for it and ask the Lord to bless us with the Spirit, so we can steer clear of the darkness of the adversary and into the light. He will guide us, and he wants to; we first must ask though. From the night terrors as a child, like the Savior in our lives when we ask, my father was there for me as a comfort and guide and gave me light when I asked for relief from nightmares. Both examples are a great reminder to be afraid of the dark; turn away from those things that would lead us astray, cause us to stumble and hurt ourselves, or even lead us blindly to distroy us, and come into the light of the Savior. |
